Downtown Area NeighborhoodVibrant, Energetic, Urban, and Historic, Downtown Colorado Springs is the cultural center of the City of Colorado Springs. Downtown is located just East of I-25 off Bijou Street. The Downtown neighborhood is the cornerstone of the Pikes Peak region and it’s rich history. Characterized by it’s energetic and urban vibe, downtown residents enjoy the feeling of being part of a unique and tight knit community. Colorado Springs was founded in1871 by General William Palmer. His vision was to create a high quality resort community at the base of the spectacular Front Range. After the construction of the historic Antler’s Hotel, the city began to boom when Victorian families visited from the East coast and began building summer homes in Downtown Colorado Springs. Many of these luxurious and historic residences still stand in all their glory today, along Wood, Cascade, and Nevada Avenues. Eventually the city was nicknamed “Little London” because of the influx of English tourists that came to visit Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods. Also contributing to the success and popularity of the burgeoning city and Downtown Colorado Springs area was the creation of the elite and world renowned Colorado College in 1874. Colorado College was the first accredited college built in the State of Colorado, and remains a source of great pride to our city to this day. People from all over the world still travel and relocate here due to the health benefits of the high altitude, dry climate, and clean mountain air. Colorado Springs is the perfect place to call home and is a Mecca for lovers of the natural beauty of the region, the health-savvy, athletes, and many members of the United States armed forces. Downtown Colorado Springs is also home to the United States Olympic Training Center and the United States Olympic Committee.
